Students with laptop computers now have Internet access at several locations on JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus, thanks to a grant from the Manley Trust. The new wireless network installation project, begun last year, provides students with access to a web browser, connections to JCC’s online student services and website, and e-mail, instant messaging, and chat capabilities. JCC also provides users with a virtual private network that can be downloaded to provide users with encrypted, secure connections.
Wi-fi hotspots will be identified by prominent stickers in student lounges and other popular gathering areas in the College Center, Allied Health and Science Center, Dresser-Rand Training and Conference Center (Depot), Library and Liberal Arts Center, Cutco Theater/Magnano Reception Room areas, and Technology Center. Once connected to JCC’s wired network, students are prompted to read JCC’s user agreement and computer use and wireless policies before proceeding.
The F.T. and Anna C. Manley Memorial Trust provided support for the wireless access project with a generous gift of $40,000. |

JCC Foundation Receives Largest Gift from an Individual
$1Million+
A recent appreciated stock gift of $1,045,239 to the “Funding Excellence” campaign at Jamestown Community College has earned the distinction of being the largest single gift from an individual donor in the history of the JCC Foundation. Fifty percent of the gift will support JCC’s signature scholarship program, the Unified Student Assistance Endowed Scholarship, with the remainder to be used to establish an endowment to support innovative academic programs. The donor has requested not to be recognized at this time.
“Although the JCC Foundation has received generous gifts of this size in the past from foundations, this was by far the largest single gift received by an individual,” said Larry Sorokes, executive director of the JCC Foundation. “This is a wonderful example of philanthropy in its truest sense.”
Echoing Sorokes’ sentiments JCC President Gregory T. DeCinque said, “We deeply appreciate this individual’s generosity and commitment to JCC. This gift is a true testimony of how JCC touches the lives of our students, alumni, and community. This donor clearly understands that a gift to JCC is an investment in the community’s future. As JCC’s flagship scholarship program, Unified Student Assistance covers tuition for our region’s top scholars. It’s gratifying to see how many of those top scholars return to our area after transferring to earn their upper-division degrees and then play significant roles in the community.”
The $ 7 million “Funding Excellence” campaign began in 2004 with priorities that include the creation of a $1 million technology endowment, $½ million cultural arts endowment, $½ million basketball scholarship endowment, $3 million Unified Student Assistance endowment, and $2 million for bricks and mortar projects on the Jamestown Campus. Currently, the campaign is at $5.2 million.
